Job Overview


Blank Rome is seeking an independent, personable and detailed Paralegal to support attorneys in the Intellectual Property and Technology department in delivering the highest level of service to internal and external clients for litigation matters in federal and state courts, as well as post grant proceedings at the Patent Office. As a contributing team member, the Paralegal is proactive in balancing multiple work demands, taking responsibility for the quality and timeliness of their work, and maintaining client and firm confidentiality.


This role has a hybrid working arrangement. Potential candidates must live within commuting distance of our Washington, DC office to be onsite 3 days per week. In this role, you will report to the Director of Paralegal Services.

 

 

Essential Functions


  • Prepare and maintain (or oversee maintenance of) case files, indices, and chronologies.
  • Monitor docket and alert attorneys to upcoming deadlines.
  • Assemble and organize requested materials for attorney or client review.
  • Manage cases by using computer applications, including databases (document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, word processing, and collaborative tools such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Assist in the document production process, including reviewing materials for production and/or privilege, tagging and redaction, preparing privilege and redaction logs, and utilizing document review tools for the quality control of productions.
  • Guide clients in defensible processes applying the rules of ESI preservation and collection.
  • Utilize internet file transfer, FTP, document security/encryption, and best practices in client data management.
  • Interact with eDiscovery vendors, supplying vendor management and quality control.
  • Draft correspondence, memoranda, and pleadings.
  • Coordinate preparation of motions and briefs including proofreading, cite-checking (if applicable), assembly of exhibits, filing and service.
  • Perform investigative and background research, including witness location, and cases/legal authority gathering.
  • Review and analyze documents, data, and depositions as required.
  • Assist in preparation for depositions of fact/expert witnesses and attend depositions as needed.
  • Assist with preparation for hearings and trials including managing documents for exhibits, preparing witness binders, coordinating deposition designations, reviewing and organizing materials, preparing electronic presentations, and coordinating with litigation support personnel.
  • Coordinate trial set up including all trial work rooms, resources needed on-site at trial, and coordinating with any vendors used at trial.
  • Provide proactive management of larger cases, including coordination of support efforts and preparing for upcoming events.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Work additional hours as needed to fulfill job requirements.

Skills/Qualifications


  • 1+ year of paralegal experience, specifically in intellectual property litigation.
  • Experience with matters before the ITC is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree, paralegal certification, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Experience in a legal environment or professional services required.
  • Certification and formal training in an eDiscovery (ACEDS, Relativity, NUIX, etc.), records management (ARMA), information governance, or data privacy areas preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electronic filing in federal and state court and at the Patent Office for post grant proceedings.
  • Hands-on experience or training with ESI tools and general knowledge of electronic discovery procedures and resources.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to develop positive working relationships (in-person and virtually).
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with effective organizational skills.
