Job Overview


The Senior Business Development Manager serves as the business development lead for one or more our various practice groups and industry teams, including the Cannabis, Corporate, and Litigation practices. The Senior Business Development Manager works with the Practice Group Leaders (PGLs) and Team Leads to grow and maintain client relationships by presenting new solutions and services to clients and achieve financial growth.


This role has a hybrid working arrangement. Potential candidates must live within commuting distance of our Los Angeles or Boston to be onsite 3 days per week. In this role, you will report to the Director of Business Development.


Essential Functions


  • Work with the PGLs and individual attorneys to develop and implement practice-specific marketing and business development plans.
  • Work with the PGLs and Industry Team leads to understand the exact strengths and opportunities inherent in each practice and work with PGLs and Industry Team leads to implement business development strategies.
  • Perform customized special projects for the PGLs and Industry Team leads.
  • Regularly attend practice group and industry team meetings to learn about new initiatives and provide updates about relevant marketing and business development activities.
  • Develop targeted pitches and presentations as well as responses to requests for proposals (RFPs) that speak to the client’s needs, concerns, and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the pricing and innovation team on RFP/proposal responses when necessary to develop a competitive pricing model focused on the client’s legal spend and specific needs.
  • Compile and draft matter descriptions for use in proposals, on the website, and in our expertise & experience management system (Foundation) and ensure that matter descriptions are entered and updated within Foundation.
  • Regularly update marketing collateral and transaction lists and keep them stored in the experience management system (Foundation) for use in developing client proposals.
  • Collaborate with the practice management team to plan and schedule new laterals to present at practice group meetings and the Cross-Practice Meet-Up (CPM) program.
  • Evaluate firm clients to identify opportunities for cross-selling across practice areas and offices. Track client development activities and new business development efforts in the firm’s Client Relationship Management system (InterAction).
  • Stay current on market and business trends to understand the competitive landscapes of the practice.
  • Collaborate and work in tandem to support the firm’s industry teams with key partners to further develop additional business opportunities.
  • Work with new lateral partners on their integration into the firm, including but not limited to transitioning existing clients to Blank Rome, pitching prospective clients, developing a 6-12 month marketing/business development plan, and connecting them with key players in the various practice and industry groups that align with their practice.
  • Work with Office Chairs and attorneys to support business development and marketing strategies and regionally-based events and activities.
  • Collaborate and assist team members with business development activities, events and strategies. Work
  • Work with the appropriate practice group leaders and attorneys to develop strategic responses to award submissions, most specifically the annual Chambers rankings. Take the lead in developing submissions for recognition programs.
  • Manage sponsorships of events, including preparation of marketing materials and ads, attorney registrations, and follow-up coordination.
  • Work with the Client Events and Martech teams, manage and oversee all aspects of client facing events, including reviewing and proofing content, coordinating posting to the website, development of mailing lists, and dissemination.
  • Manage newsletter and alert distribution.
  • Work closely with other administrative departments and colleagues (e.g. IT, practice management, etc.) to effectively serve our internal and external clients.
  • Working with other firm teams such as Pro Bono, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I), IT Security, and Office of General Counsel is also required on an as needed basis.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Work additional hours as needed to fulfill job requirements.

Skills/Qualifications


  • 8+ years of experience in business development and marketing.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (e.g., MBA or J.D.) preferred.
  • Experience in a legal environment or professional services required.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to develop positive working relationships (in-person and virtually).

Compensation


The salary range for this role in California is $150,000 - $175,000. Positions outside of California will be subject to salary ranges specific to the market for that particular geographic location. Actual salaries will vary depending upon various factors, including relevant experience and skillset. The salary range listed is just one component of Blank Rome’s total compensation package for employees. Other monetary rewards include annual discretionary bonuses based on performance and profit-sharing contributions based on eligibility and firm profitability.
